When somebody or something acts in a certain way and does something, I am in a position to react to it. And not only the direct and physical reaction, but precisely the (sub)conscious process leading up to it is what intrigues me. An alertness needed to observe and to make choices at the same time. Seeing how a situation manifests itself and acting on how it might develop further. I hand over control to an external factor within a structure I created for both coalescence and conflict.

I determine something, but a place, situation, material or another person also determines something. By making use of one and taking away the function of another an alienated situation is created. The meaningfulness of the function is what I question. For example: when not dealing with an object the way it’s meant to be dealt with, moments where the characteristics and the properties of the material start to speak, come forward. It gives the object some kind of saying in the whole making process. An object could resist one of my acts and say ‘Oh no, what you are trying to do to me right now is not going to happen’ or ‘You can use me this way, but don’t expect me to be flexible later’.

I combine materials from different contexts into a new similar one, and move myself to contexts to investigate how I can react to these. These contexts can also be situations consisting of different people within changing collaborations, in which the emphasis lies more on the performative interaction with the other.
